Get ahead of flu season with a flu shot!

Listen to Lisa Perkins, an RN at the Bear River Health Department that oversees the Immunization Program, talk about the flu and the vaccine for this upcoming flu season.

Flu season is right around the corner, and now is the perfect time to start thinking about your flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the flu shot for everyone ages 6 months and older, and it’s one of the best ways to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community.

While you can get a flu shot as soon as it’s available, health experts suggest that late September through early October is the ideal window for vaccination. That way, your body builds immunity right before flu season really picks up and you’ll have the best protection throughout the winter months.

Clearing Up Misconceptions

One of the biggest myths about the flu shot is that it can give you the flu. That’s simply not true. The flu vaccine cannot cause the flu. Some people might experience mild side effects—like a sore arm, low-grade fever, or body aches—for a day or so after the shot. This is a normal response and a sign that your body is building protection against the flu.

Why It Matters for Everyone

Even if you’re young and healthy, getting vaccinated is still important. The flu can be serious for anyone, but especially for older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions. By getting your shot, you help reduce your own risk and also help protect those around you who may be more vulnerable.
