February is American Heart Month: Protect Your Heart by Quitting Smoking

February is American Heart Month, a time to focus on all the ways we can improve our heart health. One of the most powerful steps you can take to protect your heart is quitting smoking.

Why Quitting Matters

Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The chemicals in cigarettes damage blood vessels, raise blood pressure, and increase the likelihood of dangerous blood clots. But the good news is that quitting smoking can have immediate and long-term benefits:

  • Within 20 minutes of quitting, your heart rate and blood pressure drop.
  • Within 24 hours, your risk of heart attack begins to decrease.
  • Within one year, your risk of heart disease is cut in half.

Steps to Quit Smoking

Quitting can be tough, but with the right plan and support, you can do it. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Prepare Yourself – Set a quit date, make a plan, and talk to your doctor about resources that can help.
  2. Get Support – Let your friends, family, or a support group know about your plan so they can encourage you.
  3. Manage Stress – Find ways to relax, stay active, drink plenty of water, and distract yourself when cravings hit.
  4. Use Resources – Contact Way to Quit for free counseling, nicotine replacement therapy, and additional education.
