Mike Weibel, Bear River Health Department’s Emergency Manager, shares some great tips for getting ready for winter travel in this episode of Give’m Health.
Stay Safe and Ready for Cold-Weather Emergencies
As winter sets in across Cache, Box Elder, and Rich counties, it’s a good time to make sure you and your family are ready for whatever the cold weather brings. Snowstorms, icy roads, and freezing temperatures can turn a simple trip into an emergency if you’re not prepared.
A car emergency during winter can quickly become dangerous. Before heading out, make sure your vehicle is winter-ready:
- Keep non-perishable food, water, and warm blankets in your car.
- Pack extra clothes, a small snow shovel, and kitty litter (for traction if you get stuck).
- Always keep your gas tank at least half full.
- Make sure your phone stays charged — and carry a backup power bank if possible.
- Keep something to pass the time, like a book, in case you need to conserve battery power.
Even a short drive can become stressful if your car breaks down in freezing temperatures. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping you safe and warm.
Prepare Your Home and Family
Winter isn’t just hard on vehicles — it’s tough on homes too. Take time to think through what your family would need if the power went out or if roads were closed. Store extra food, water, and basic supplies, and make a family communication plan so everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

Four Steps to Get Prepared
Utah’s official emergency preparedness site shares a simple four-step process to help you get started:
- Be Informed – Know the risks in your area.
- Make a Plan – Create a plan for your family and home.
- Get a Kit – Gather supplies for your car and house.
- Get Involved – Learn more and help others in your community prepare.
Preparedness doesn’t have to be complicated — just start small, and start today.
